Allegory of the Old & New Testaments

This is a premium-quality print of An Allegory of the Old and New Testaments, painted by Hans Holbein the Younger around the early 1530s using the medium of oil on canvas. The images and inscriptions provide a painted sermon. The central theme, encouraged by the Reformation, is the contrast between the unforgiving Old Testament Law on the left, and the forgiving Grace of the New Testament on the right. Man’s failure to obey the commandments God gave to Moses, led to sin and death, however, man is forgiven and achieves salvation through Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection.

Hans Holbein the Younger was a German painter and one of the greatest portrait painters of the 16th Century who worked in a Northern Renaissance style. Click here to see more premium-quality classic art prints.
