Being in the forefront of the impressionistic movement in the 70’s of the 19th century, Pierre-Auguste Renoir also highly appreciated achievements of Barbizon School leaders. The depiction of reality outdoors, encircling all its colour and light-related issues, became the major resolution for Renoir alongside his comrades. However, the Limoges-born painter expanded so called impressionistic landscape theme and paid major attention to human images within differently sunlit and coloured spaces. In his worldly renowned Bal du Moulin de la Galette, the painter adroitly mixes his Interest towards both the picture’s technical resolution and joyful atmosphere surrounding the seated or dancing figures. Regardless of such diversion, Renoir still makes the emphasis on the colouristic decision. After dedicating himself to extensive studies of special light effects, he seems not to save his efforts to liven up the jumble of colours and use his techniques for making the latter sparkle on human faces with simple and rapid brushstrokes. The thoroughly depicted first plan figures are slowly replaced by free and bold brush movements, allowing to make visible impressionistic air and sunlight-absorbed multiple silhouettes. Renoir had no equal in representing pleasant vibes by laying blue, yellow, grey and pinkish colours side by side. “Luncheon of the Boating Party” reveals the Artist’s soft colour-focused aspirations even better, that was fairly praised by critics: “There are bits of drawing that are completely remarkable”– wrote Armand Silvestre, “…that is a result of the juxtaposition of hues and not of line”.

Nature-like form creating clean and bright colours reign in Renoir’s other pieces as well, including a variety of portraits and naked feminine bodies, promoting influencing sensualism.

Renoir’s interest towards colour and light interrelation, often carried out together with the greatest enthusiast in this field – Claude Monet, found its embodiment on thousands of canvases displayed at various exhibitions (Two Sisters, The Large Bathers, La Grenoillere, Dance at Bougival, etc). Despite this fact, upon getting close to his final achievements, the French painter somehow rejected impressionistic inclinations, coming back to “ever-blooming” academic regulations after exploring the Renaissance masters and other classic craftsmen. The appeal of linear silhouettes, clearly visible in his works of 80’s, justly won the name of “Ingres” period to this phase of his professional life. Although maintaining apparently bright palette, the Painter did not return to impressionism even in his later works. Nevertheless, his artistic heritage through the prism of newly burst out movement, became indivisible from plein air admirers.
