No Guarantees by KAWS

‘No Guarantees’ is a significant acrylic on canvas painting by the American artist KAWS, created in 2012. Measuring 173 by 218.5 centimetres (68 by 86 inches), this work exemplifies KAWS’s distinctive approach to contemporary art, blending elements of pop culture with fine art techniques. The painting features bold colours and abstract forms, characteristic of KAWS’s style, which often reimagines familiar cartoon figures in unexpected ways.

The provenance of ‘No Guarantees’ traces back to Galerie Perrotin in Paris, a gallery known for representing contemporary artists. Following its initial acquisition, the piece entered a private collection in France before being acquired by its current owner. The painting was exhibited at Galerie Perrotin during the ‘Imaginary Friends’ exhibition from November to December 2012, showcasing KAWS’s exploration of companionship and isolation themes.

In July 2020, ‘No Guarantees’ was offered at Christie’s Modern and Contemporary Art Evening Sale in Hong Kong. The painting was estimated to sell between HKD 6,200,000 and HKD 8,200,000 (approximately USD 800,000 to USD 1,050,000). However, the final hammer price was HKD 4,925,000 (around USD 635,000), reflecting the dynamic nature of the art market and the varying demand for contemporary works.

KAWS, born Brian Donnelly in 1974, has established himself as a prominent figure in contemporary art, renowned for his ability to bridge the gap between commercial and fine art. His work often features reimagined pop culture icons, rendered with a unique blend of humour and melancholy. ‘No Guarantees’ exemplifies this approach, inviting viewers to reconsider the familiar through a new lens, and highlighting KAWS’s commentary on consumerism and popular culture.
