Best in Show II by Courtney Prahl

Courtney Prahl’s Best in Show II is a richly imagined collage that radiates personality, warmth and a quietly joyful sense of storytelling. The artwork features a stylised dachshund, its distinctive silhouette instantly recognisable and full of charm. Built from layers of textured paper in glowing red tones, the dog appears almost sculptural, with a single black ear providing contrast and visual balance. A small green leafy twig rests gently in its mouth, an endearing detail that introduces a feeling of calm, care and playful intention.

The dog’s body is a patchwork of visual discoveries. Snippets of maps, musical scores, printed words and handwritten marks interlock to form a surface that feels both thoughtful and spontaneous. These fragments hint at journeys, memories and everyday moments, encouraging the viewer to look closer and uncover new details with each viewing. Prahl’s sensitive handling of collage gives the artwork depth without heaviness, allowing the textures to breathe and interact naturally.

Surrounding the figure is a soft, airy blue background that suggests open sky and light. Floating white circles and abstract green and blue forms drift across the space, evoking leaves, clouds or passing thoughts. This gentle backdrop enhances the sense of movement and imagination within the piece. Below, the ground is formed from a vibrant arrangement of rectangular paper elements, each marked with typography, numbers or phrases. This lively foundation adds rhythm and narrative energy, anchoring the dachshund while reinforcing the artwork’s playful sophistication.

Prahl is known for transforming found materials into emotionally engaging compositions, and Best in Show II reflects her talent for blending nostalgia with a contemporary aesthetic. The artwork feels comforting yet inventive, familiar yet surprising, making it a piece that resonates on both visual and emotional levels.
