The Surrender of Breda

This is a premium-quality print on canvas of the iconic Diego Velázquez artwork La rendición de Breda which is The Surrender of Breda in English, however, this art is also commonly referred to as Las lanzas, The Lances. The painting was finished around 1634-1635 and was inspired by a trip to Italy with Ambrogio Spinola, the Spanish general who won the siege of Breda on June the fifth, 1625. The painting depicts the moment the keys to Breda were exchanged from the Dutch’s possession to the Spanish.

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez was a Spanish Golden Age painter and artist in the court of King Philip IV. Velázquez’s painted what he loved, historical and cultural paintings but as part of his role as the lead court artist, he also undertook portraits of the Spanish royal family.
