Oostzijdse Mill along the River Gein

Oostzijdse Mill along the River Gein, painted in 1907 by Piet Mondrian, captures the quiet beauty of the Dutch countryside before the artist became one of the most influential pioneers of modern abstract art. In this early Realist and Impressionist work, Mondrian presents a traditional windmill standing peacefully beside the River Gein, its dark silhouette reflected in the glassy water beneath a softly clouded sky. Painted in muted shades of blue, grey, cream and earthy green, the composition exudes stillness and balance, revealing the artist’s remarkable sensitivity to atmosphere, light and structure, qualities that would later underpin his revolutionary geometric style.
