About Banksy
Banksy is a UK based graffiti artist, political activist and more recently a film director. His satirical street art and distinctive stencil approach to graffiti combine his dark humour with graffiti with strong politically charged undertones. Banksy artworks of political and social commentary have been seen on the streets, walls, and bridges of cities across the globe from Vienna to San Francisco, Barcelona to Paris and Detroit, Thailand to Israel and beyond.
As Banksy was born in the Barton Hill area of Bristol, it’s no surprise that Banksy’s made his name in the Bristol underground scene starting with some collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist who later became a founding member of the English musical group Massive Attack and there has been a great deal of speculation that he is actually a member of Massive Attack due to the coincidence of timing with their concerts and the artworks popping up by Banksy.
Banksy created an academy award-nominated, documentary film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, billed as “the world’s first street art disaster movie”, which made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, this movie launched him and his graffiti wall art into the headlights of the world. In January 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the film.
Banksy displays his canvas art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and later in his career on self-built physical prop pieces. In 2010 Time magazine selected the British artist Banksy, the graffiti master, painter, activist, filmmaker and all-purpose provocateur for its list of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2010, he found himself in the lauded company of Barack Obama, Steve Jobs and Lady Gaga.
When asked to supply a picture for the media, he sent a picture of himself with a paper bag (recyclable, naturally) over his head. In 2014, he was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards. All this by a Graffiti Street Artist that until recently kept his identity a secret and was only know by ‘Banksy Artwork’.
Banksy Artwork
It was the first time a street artist creating Graffiti Wall Art has made the leap from an outlaw spraying or “bombing” of walls in Bristol, England, to a point where his artwork commands hundreds of thousands of dollars in the auction houses. However, after Banksy paved the way a number of graffiti artists have started to become celebrities in their own right as this art-form starts to hit the mainstream.

One of my personal favourites snaps shots about Banksy is the anecdote he tells as to why he started using stencils for his graffiti. When he was 18, he was painting a train with a group of mates when the British Transport Police arrived and everyone ran away. “The rest of my mates made it to the car,” Banksy recalled, “and disappeared so I spent over an hour hidden under a dumper truck with engine oil leaking all over me.
As I lay there listening to the cops on the tracks, I realized I had to cut my painting time in half or give it up altogether. I was staring straight up at the stencilled plate on the bottom of the fuel tank when I realised I could just copy that style and make each letter three feet high. He states, as soon as I cut my first stencil I could feel the power there. I also like the political edge. All graffiti is low-level dissent, but stencils have an extra history. They’ve been used to start revolutions and to stop wars.”
