Juan Gris was born in Madrid in 1887 he studied engineering in Madrid from 1902 to 1904, during which time he also took classes at the Escuela de Artes y Manufacturas. In 1905, Gris abandoned engineering and devoted himself to painting. In 1906 he moved to Paris, where he came into contact with a group of avant–garde artists, including Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, and began to develop the cubist style that would dominate his work.
