Rokeby Venus by Velázquez

This is a premium-quality print on canvas of the iconic Diego Velázquez artwork Rokeby Venus. This famous painting is also known as The Toilet of Venus, Venus at her Mirror and Venus and Cupid, it was painted somewhere around 1647-1651, it is believed that Velázquez painted the artwork whilst on a visit to Italy. The painting depicts a prone Venus eyeing herself in a mirror which is being held by Cupid, Cupid was Venus’s son and the Roman god of love. Rokey Venus was hung in the houses of Spanish courtiers until 1813, it was then removed to England and hung in Rokey Park which is where it gained its name.

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez was a Spanish Golden Age painter and artist in the court of King Philip IV. Velázquez’s painted what he loved, historical and cultural paintings but as part of his role as the lead court artist, he also undertook portraits of the Spanish royal family.
